Rudin writes as if his audience is already pretty familiar with math, which shouldn't be the case for someone learning basic analysis. What writing utensil do you use for math? Why is it that almost 300 years after Euler found the solution to the Basel Problem, that we still don't have a closed form solution for Apéry's Constant? Previous Post Solution to Principles of Mathematical Analysis Chapter 6 Part B. Even if you can go through each proof line by line (which I doubt you'll be able to, but that's an aside), without a teacher to explain why a particular proof is important or why the book is laid out in the manner in which it is, you're going to go through an awful lot of effort which would be better spent on a more intuitive book (read: one with more detail between theorems and more detail in proving theorems). Some may dislike the book's many parenthetical whys, but they send a very strong signal that you're not supposed to just take whatever he writes at face value. For example, if you are in college, what kind of college are you in and how would you compare yourself to your classmates? Maybe "You Can Count On Monsters"? It's not an unreadable book, but I think that someone really prepared for it ought to be ready to get into measure theory instead of something so basic. The homework problems at the end of each chapter are crucial. Image-only posts should be on-topic and should promote discussion; please do not post memes or similar content here. That's one of my favorite undergraduate books, and I personally enjoyed it much more than Rudin. this is the first one which worked! Know your definitions in-and-out.. you should be able to write a definition out and its negation if need be. Carothers writes lucidly and motivates the ideas well while sprinkling a lot of foreshadowing around. You're assuming that the OP has had no such course. Please read the FAQ before posting. While there are books that are more intuitive insofar as learning Analysis, going through a book like Baby Rudin is a great experience for forcing you to learn how to think for yourself when reading a math book. Then try to prove it before reading the proof given. I'm not one to recommend starting out in the deep end, I actually think there's a lot of benefit to easing yourself into mathematics by using texts that give very thorough explanations and try to aid intuition.
